Wow, back from vacation and all sorts of new mods. A cape-less April, cool! Maybe I'm a male pig (my wife thinks so), but from the box art I thought April's outfit woud be more of a black skin tight, leather, high boot, X-men-ish outfit. Zoe is great as is, but April in new duds would be awesome.

Question Problems with the installation of a Dreamfall Mod (german version)

    Hi,
I just discovered the Dreamfall mods and I was delighted when I saw that there was a "black loading screen"-mod. I am just in the middle of the game and right from the beginning (of an otherwise absolutely fantastic game!) I found the loading screen (when going to different parts of a location) quite a bit disturbing with regard to the immersion into the game. It felt like being remembered that you're just playing a computer game, quite a sobering experience. I got a little bit used to it, but still...

I tried out the dfmodactivator-2006-06-07.zip, adding the contents of the "skribb_black_loading_screen.zip"-archive to the "mods"-Folder.

After getting an error message when trying to install, I discovered in a message of this thread that the file "resource.pak" should temporarily be removed from the "Dreamfall\bin\res-directory" in case of using an european version of the game.

After doing so, the following installation procedure went by without error messages. The two following files have seemingly succesfully been backupped, the new files are a little bit smaller:

    - original files:
    common.pak.orig 287.104
    init.pak.orig 3.712

    - new files:
    common.pak 286.848
    init.pak 3.584

But when starting Dreamfall (after copying back the resource.pak) and loading one of my saves, the old loading screen is still present! (with the animated circles an the Dreamfall-title).

I would really appreciate if could give me a hint concernig what may have gone wrong, i would really love to continue playing the game without the "loading" graphics! Thank you for answering!

Black. And believe it or not, I'm not sure exactly HOW it worked. Because for this mod, I use a regular png, instead of the usual .dds renamed to png. Originally this was a mistake, but seeing as it worked I didn't have to fix it.

You know what, I thought about it. And still am, kinda. I was out checking peoples belly-button's, and came to the conclusion that ZoŽs belly-button is JUST underneath the part where her top ends. But maybe that's just me? It won't be too hard to make a belly-button, afterall

I suspect the game was designed to load both PNGs and DDSes. During development they would have used PNGs, since they're easier to work with. This is where the filename convention came from. And then as a final step for the release, they converted all the files to DDS, because they load faster. But the filenames didn't change, perhaps because the engine internals were referring to the .png extension everywhere...

Not sure about that...converting Zoe's main body texture to a straight PNG file and then 'injecting' it into the game with DFModActivator doesn't quite come out the same as a DDS'd PNG (though, it does look kinda cool - chrome-plated Zoe!):

And for whoever it was that asked a few pages ago, the trick used to de-cape April does work for Zoe's ponytail:

Me too, but it will look kinda weird. Anyhoo, I'll see what I can do, maybe tomorrow. I'm right in the middle of something right now (painting my walls and putting in a new floor) so I'm quite busy at the moment. If someone else wants to give it a shot they're free to do so, of course!

Here's the start of it at least - still a pink hairband, just no ponytail:

EDIT: Done. Since the models can't be changed, I did what I figured was the next best solution, and recoloured the pink headband to black, to match the rest of Zoe's hair. There's still something not quite right with it - the edges of where the ponytail used to join onto the headband are sometimes visible - there's a faint outline (you'll see).

You can see what I meant by the faint outline in the second picture.

skribb: doesn't seem to matter what colour is in the PNG file, as long as it is a straight PNG versus a DDS in disguise.

And for anyone who may (or may not) want it, here's the other blonde mod I did:

    THANK YOU!

And that outline doesn't exactly bother me. Much more troublesome was the damn ponytail...

Heee! Off to play Dreamfall modded!

Looks pretty OK, too bad you can't individually remove the hairband

    Wink About the models . . .

I've been working on a crude way to get models in and out of Dreamfall. I made some success today... actually enough that I can edit character models. However, it's a really long, frustrating and completely insane procedure as of now. You also have to rely on shareware programs that just barely do enough for us without registering. Here are the steps if anyone wants to edit stuff:

    1) Get the latest version of DreamView
    2) Download MeshX
    3) Open the model you want in DreamView and export as .x file
    4) Open .x file in MeshX
    5) Struggle with the worst interface I have ever used. It will take you an hour to figure out how to reshape a single polygon. It really sucks... but it does keep the .x file in good shape.
    6) Use "save all" to save everything back to the .x file
    7) Email your .x file to me
    8) Wait a few days while I edit the .x file and spawn a reconfabulated unstable version of DreamView (in no way endorsed by pinkunozou) to pump the mesh data into Dreamfall for you
    9) Backup everything you care about
    10) Run my poor excuse for a program
    11) Start Dreamfall and feel really really really really lucky if it doesn't crash when the character animates.

Alternately if you just want to see the model in a 3D modeler of your choice (like Blender), you can download 3D Object Converter which will convert to the format of you liking but strip the texture data (because it doesn't handle multiple textures per mesh). It converts to Blender format okay, and I had a little fun playing with Zoe's... um... shape for a couple hours. However, since the texture data goes bye-bye it's going to take a HUGE amount of work to get any changes back into Dreamfall.

This is all temporary of course. I'm sure pinkunozou will make some real magic happen in the near future

The link for the solid black loading screen mod appears to not be working. My download sits there for a few seconds doing nothing and then it aborts. Can anyone put up a mirror for the mod? Thanks.
