Exclamation Unofficial Update for Modern PC's.

    Hello,

I registered just to tell the other people that like The Longest Journey (the best Adventure game I ever played )
about a fix for AntiAliasing / AntiStrophic filtering for ATi cards that support it.
This was discovered by Black_Paladin , swinebird04 and Edge_343 (order means nothing).

And some font changes I made to make the text easier to read on big screens and high resolutions,
at the cost of some immersion.

This is an all in one package for those playing this great game on
modern PC's. Here are some images of how it looks.

Here are some mirrors for downloading the package:
Mirror 1 (provided by Demon Internet Sevices).
Mirror 2 (provided by Lycos Netherlands)..

Have fun playing The Longest Journey , and for more information : My email address is in the archive
and you can also reply to this thread.

    ---INSTALATION INSTRUCTIONS---
    1. Make backups of the files that will be overwritten.
    2. Extract the .ZIP file to your TLJ folder.
If you have any program to unzip it , visit http://www.7-zip.org/.
    3. Enable AA/AF in your driver control panel or via Ati Tray Tool.
    4. Play.

    Xav.

Sweet! Although the font looks weird in TLJ, which might just be because it's different, the AntiAliasing looks super sweet!
I have about the same question as Karthik@KANE: will this also work on other video cards? If not; why?

I tried it, and it works! The only problem I'm having is that when ever the cursor becomes an animated cursor, like when you hover it above a person or a usable object, it leaves some kind of blurry box on the screen. Any idea how to fix that?

Hmm...it's okay guys. I managed to get the game workin in XP running WHQL drivers version 77.77! I set AA to 4XS and Anisotropic to 8X. My eyes just !
I might replay the game one of these days! Now I'm off to test it with other games!

    TEXT

the game looks ace with aa/af on, BUT i haven't found a way to stop all text in the game being... pink! Its sort of makes the font shadows pink but kind of bold, in some cases baking it hard to read. the same is true for all text in the game.

RaMa, check to see if "force single buffer" is enabled in the advanced settings, that used to solve the mouse trail problem. Seek83, the pink text is a known problem, here's the solution from the official readme.txt:

Go to Display Properties, select the "Effects" tab and uncheck "Smooth edges of screen fonts".

    Turn off Font Smoothing.
I'm in a hurry so I don't have time to post details. Sorry...

I have only tested it on the 4CD English version , but I think it will work on any 4CD version.

You can always try it with a 2CD version , but make backups.

Just want to thank for this unofficial update. I just bought this game really cheap(4 disc english version) and I could not run the game at all at first. Using windows XP SP2, ATI X800XT.
Game just crashed once the intro movie for the developer ended.
I downloaded your update and use the game.exe(launcher is not a valid win32 program) and run it in compatibility mode for win98.
I also use 6xAA and the game looks really nice then.
    Big thanx.
This thread should be made a sticky on this forum.
Also I think the developers should release an official patch to support winxp.

Thank you for all the positive comment. I think the reason they don't want to is because the release of Dreamfall is around the corner, and maybe they give away the original game with the special edition or something (would sure buy it if they did

At least for some people I've talked to, it is possible to play the 4 CD version on XP, but most likely not on all hardware.

The main reason we don't release a patch for the 4 CD version (version 143 and earlier) is that we've moved from that codebase to one that runs on 2 CDs, but uses a different sound engine and needs different data. So you couldn't use our current code with the data on the 4 CDs, and a patch would either have to include all the new sound (that's almost the entire first CD) or disable sound entirely, neither of which is any good. Plus we don't really sell that version any longer.

When you buy TLJ in a store, make sure it says on the box that it supports XP - it only does so on the boxes that have the 2 CD version in them.

Well this unofficial update does not work on my 1.51 2cd version. I would appreciate deeply if somebody enabled antialiasing on the 2cd version.

Edit: Actually, I updated my version to 1.53 (well, the newest one), and I turned antialiasing on in the display properties for my TI4600 card. And it sure works fine with TLJ 2cd version. I don't even use this unofficial update posted here.
