...while hanging arround with my friends in some club, we started talking about small buisness ideas, and about "how to get rich over night". After joking around with ideas like: becoming porn movie producers:D, or making our own TV Show, the word "Bar" suddenly wen't through my head. I sortof thought that our sick society would need a homey place, with good music, a place made with...taste. That's when i started thinkin abou the TLJ Fringe Cafe, because it has both: ...coolness and warmth! Of course the cafe would be full with obiects that remind of TLJ (even if they are not in the game "fringe cafe"), and it have a TLJ atmosfere. It would be a meditation place for those that love TLJ, and for those that will eventualy love TLJ.
Me and my friends got pretty exited talking about that. ...as in every mather, money is always the problem! :) Putting our fonds togheter, we would have only like 20.000$, wich is probably not enaugh. Maybe Funcom would sponsor this project a bit (not even i believe this :) ). We gotta gather more information about...just everything! :) It's just a concept now, but it might develop into something more...hopefully.
...i know, i know...i'm a dreamer. I was like very exited about this idea, and had no one to tell about it, so i posted it here...
...i need opinions...is it a bad ideea?

Well leave that grumpy penny pinching owner behind ;) To keep staff happy they should NOT have to nag for their pay cheque!

Whee, I think that's a lovely idea. But you must have MANY Fringe Cafés all around the world (including Lappland) - and still keep them small 8)

If there will be a jukebox playing similar relaxing ambient/dub tracks like in the game, I am for!

And including Germany! Preferably in Hessen.

Hey people, let's make it a chain cafè, but! Let's keep the quality and the warmth! And yes, we should definitely have a jukebox with the same music! :D

We need warm bread and bad tasting candy too! :)

And free tickets for students. But that might be hard to get in Germany, except maybe free circus tickets, but you just get middle seats, with those(Fair enough for me);)

What about making it virtual? Somewhat more personalized and intimate than a forum? Anyone interested?

Not sure there'd be many places with enough TLJ fans to make it work just from them, but with a good enough atmosphere I'm sure you can bring in plenty of people that've never even heard of it.

Just don't go all upper-class on us after the collapse. :p

Edit: I hadn't even noticed this was posted in 2003, I'm guessing nothing came of the idea?

Hey, don't blame me. I just saw the last post was yesterday and didn't check any other date. :p

Now if only we could make it a bit stronger and resurrect the idea, I like the sound of it. Think I'll leave the whole 'work' and 'risk' parts needed to someone else though.

It was I who re-invented the post, knowing that it has been some time indeed, it just seemed like a very good idea, or concept at least, and it would really be a pity to let it go to waste. But we really do need a little initiative and creativity!

Sweet I'm all for the café!
- as long as it is the pre-Collapse (TLJ) theme, and not like what it is in DF
It would go perfectly with my "green bar" 'project'

I'd love to have such a place to hang :D

All great ideas begin this way. BTW... I'm not sure about over=seas but in the U.S., A business loan is always possible. Just remember... Location, location, location. ;)

By a virtual Fringe cafe do you just mean just mean a chat room for TLJ fans, or something more Habbo hotel/Second life like? If it's just a chat room anyone that wants to could easily make an IRC channel, but if you mean something with graphics too that could take a fair bit more work.

I agree that 'Ther Fringe' should have its Pre-Collapse look, as it was way more unique, intimate and cozzy. It could be in the US or another place, but as our ranks ar yet scarce, I stick to my initial sugestion that a virtual stage is required at this point. Later on, if we decide it could be a hit, we could give a more material shape to the ideea, it`s not that hard.

I also agree with Kiwi that 'The Fringe' should not be just a IRC channel or another forum ( we already have a the forum here ) - we need graphics, we need the music, the athmosphere... your Second Life place ideea sounds good, I heard that you can actually create nice things there .. or maybe a really well-designed blog for starters ... or any other thing one might think of.

I think someone should build a replica, in real life, and run it as a cafe.

I was just asking if that was what you meant, not making a suggestion. I dunno why but I've never been too interested in Second Life type things, IRC's always seemed good enough for me to talk to people online.

As for a real Fringe Cafe being made, I've got to say I doubt anyone'll do it now. It's just too long since TLJ, even though I'd call it the best game ever made it's just going to be too hard to get enough people interested. Unless there's a re-make at some stage in the future, I doubt many new people are going to be picking up the original game, and the old fans that've stuck with it probably just isn't a big enough group to make it worth the risk.

But if anyone does, I'll do my best to get there eventually. :p

If you made it a real cafe, and made the atmosphere hopping enough then you wouldn't have to rely JUST on the fanbase, only the fans will be sitting in the corner snickering and saying 'we did it'... I think it should be done... a really good setting for the first cafe would be like Lithia in Oregon... it's a very 'free' park type area with restaurants..they have the shakespearian festival there every year..and it just has the TLJ mood for me.

I really like the english. It contains many french quotes :D "C'est la vie !" I could tell :p Also, When I go to the Café in the Airport, my parents say "Bon voyage !".
This Fringe Café Idea is really nice, but if we have one thousand of "Fringes". Then we'll have many "my home away from home"... :D That would be a few fun ! ^^

I was not suggesting the Second Life or other virtual environments because I am a sociopath running away from the real world. Heck, there is nothing I would like more than hanging out in the Fringe after a busy day ... But at the moment there are severe geographical limitations. How would I or anyone else benefit from a Fringe Cafe thousands of miles away? How would anyone actually invest time / creativity / money / labor under these conditions?

As I see it, at the moment, a virtual environment is the ONLY way this project could take a shape that all of us could enjoy.

Uhm, well, that or a chain with Frindges in every land that's had TLJ realieased in it... :P

That would make a verry big chain. And would require a huge amount of money.And,sadly,no-one could be sure of profit.
