Hi. I just finished The Longest Journey and I really want to talk about it someplace I know there'll be an interest in the subject. So! Here I go.
That was one of the more enjoyable adventure game experiences I've had. At first I wasn't sure if I would get into the story but by the third or fourth chapter, it really sucked me in. I liked both worlds - Stark's gritty, pseudo cyber-punk feel and Arcadia's more natural landscapes. While some characters introduced at the beginning felt a little unused (mainly the cast at the boarding house like Emma, Charlie, etc...It killed me that you didn't get any closure with them at the end.) the later ones were wonderful. Flipper, Captain Nebaway, Brian Westhouse...And I only wish we'd gotten more of McAllen and pure-logic Halloway. They were great creepy villains.
Browsing the board a little, I see that other people also got a bit tired of the conversations. For me, if they were broken up into shorter bits that the game prompted you to ask or ignore more often, that would work. Other than that, well done dialogue. It was good to play a truly MATURE story. It didn't try to be more adult by throwing in pointless sex and violence but with a solid story that had nasty things happen because they were part of the plot, not sheerly to shock people. More videogames could learn from TLG's story in terms of making something the industry can be proud of.
I'm greatly releived to know that TLJ will have a sequel coming out. Hopefully it'll tie up some loose ends and plot points I was wondering about, and show us what ultimately happens to the Balance.
Hey, if you've read all the way down this, thanks for listening. ;)
