game shuts down randomly

While I play the game it will shut itself down back to windows without warning or message and at random times.

I save often now.

Is there a patch fix other than the police station fix?

I also had problems where the game did not recognize that the first CD was in the drive. I was able to work around this by doing the maximum install instead of the minimum.

While there aren't any patches to address this specific issue, you can check to see if there are any patches for your version here: http://www.longestjourney.com/help/patches/

Make sure that you're using the latest drivers for your video card, sound card, and motherboard, as well as the latest version of DirectX (www.microsoft.com/directx).

If you haven't already, try things like disabling 3D acceleration, enabling 'Force Single Buffer'. Go to the 'Game Settings' menu after starting the game and remove all of the checkmarks from the boxes there.

It did this for me a few times too :) It only happened a few times over the course of the game though. I played through fine. Just remember to save. It worked for me :).
